Biography:
Krall is the main antagonist in the 2016 film Star Trek Beyond. He is a former Starfleet captain named Balthazar Edison, a veteran of the early Starfleet exploration era.
Edison's disillusionment with the Federation's ideals and expansionist policies began after his ship, the USS Franklin, was lost and stranded. He and his surviving crew were forced to scavenge alien technology for survival.
Over time, Edison used this technology to genetically alter himself, becoming the alien-like Krall. He embraced a philosophy of anti-Federation sentiment, believing in the strength of conquest and conflict over peace and diplomacy.
As Krall, he sought to acquire an ancient bioweapon to destroy Starbase Yorktown and initiate a wider war against the Federation. His motivations stemmed from his perceived betrayal by Starfleet and the obsolescence of his values in a changing universe.
